Heavy Weapons Walkthrough
Heavy Weapons is an excellent arcade style action shooting game that will challenge your shooting skills and keep you entertained from the very first level to the last. There are sixty levels in total with three bosses to defeat using twenty-one different weapons - more than enough to keep the game interesting. Unlike many action shooting games that offer this many levels, the game never becomes bland or boring thanks to the regular addition of new types of enemies you need to conquer. You are given a target number of enemies you need to destroy in each level to proceed to the next one. It starts off easy with a relatively small number of enemies, but as you progress the number gets higher and it gets much more difficult to meet your goal. This isn't an easy game but it is a lot of fun.
The objective in Heavy Weapons isn't much different that the objective you get with most action shooting games. You're under attack and you need to defend yourself. In this case, you have been hired to defend the mining moons of Hoy but as simple as the premise is, the game itself can be fairly difficult. Newcomers to arcade style action shooting games are probably going to have trouble even getting through the first level even though it promises to be simple (the level itself is called 'Break You In Easy') The challenge for newcomers is going to be getting the hang of the controls you'll use to play the game. You can choose to move your ship using either 'wasd' controls or your arrow keys which makes things a bit easier, but if you have trouble with games that use both mouse and keyboard controls, you're going to have trouble here. Use the navigation controls you find the most comfortable and allow you access to your mouse so you can aim and shoot. It might take a little while, but you'll get the hang of the controls in time. More experienced players likely won't have any trouble with the controls and will find the first few levels a little on the easy side. Stick with it. The game does get harder.
Like with most arcade shooting games, Heavy Weapons gives you the chance to collect debris from destroyed ships which can be used to purchase new weapons. Although its tempting to use this money as soon as you earn it, it's a much better idea to save your money for later in the game when things get harder and you'll need new weapons to make it through. Your basic weapon is more than enough to get you through the first few levels in the game, so don't worry about buying weapons until later. For at least the first two levels, you will only be wasting your money if you buy new weapons. Don't leave yourself broke and in need of heavier weapons later in the more advanced stages of the game. Collect money through the first levels and let it accumulate. That's the only way you're going to be able to defend yourself when things start getting hard. At the end of level three, you'll notice the enemies are getting a little harder to take out and the quota to progress to the next level is getting higher. This is when you want to start considering upgrades. More advanced players may be able to survive a bit longer with the basic gun, but newcomers should invest in a solid weapon like the arc spread weapon. This weapon fires a spread shot and delivers damage to multiple enemy ships at one time. It's also fairly inexpensive so it's a good choice all around.
Buying new weapons in Heavy Weapons is a bit different than buying weapons in other action shooting games. When you buy a weapon, it is not automatically equipped in your weapons slot. You will need to click on a weapon you've purchased and choose the weapon slot you would like to have it in. Replacing another weapon in your weapon slot will not delete that weapon entirely. You can choose to equip it again in a different level if you choose to do so. This allows you to choose different weapons for different levels which is of great benefit as some weapons work better than others for certain purposes. Although you likely won't know what weapons are most beneficial in a given situation, you will be able to figure it out as you play. Look for the strengths and weaknesses in each of the weapons you own and choose your arsenal so that you have a good compliment of weapons in your arsenal. For example, if one of the weapons you want to use delivers a lot of damage but has a slow rate of fire, choose a second weapon that doesn't deliver as much damage but can fire more quickly. This way you'll have a weapon for any situation.
The first weapon you should buy in Heavy Weapons is the arc spread shot weapon for the reasons we discussed. Next, you should consider buying the ricochet weapon. This is great for use on a large number of enemies or taking on tougher enemies that are more difficult to kill. The spirraler is also a great weapon as you don't have to worry about aiming it at all. This allows you to focus on dodging enemies. Bombs are also excellent weapons because you can use them to deliver a fair bit of damage to all of the enemies in a cluster. You also have the slow time weapon which slows your enemies down a little bit and allows you to take them out a little more quickly. This is a great weapon when you are quickly being closed in on and need a moment or two to breathe and focus on shooting. There are several other great weapons in the game - twenty-one in total - but these one are my personal favorites. Play around with the weapons a bit and see which ones you like the most and see which ones work the best. You'll be able to figure it out.
The best way to get through the beginning of Heavy Weapons is to focus on smaller, faster moving ships first. They pose far more of a threat to your health that the larger, slower moving ships. Once you have the smaller ships taken care of, turn your attention to the larger ships. They take more damage before they're destroyed, but without the faster ships to worry about, you shouldn't have much trouble taking them out. Try to stay in an open space and focus on shooting enemies rather than avoiding them. When you find yourself surrounded, try to move to a new open spot. This allows you to focus on the mouse controlled aiming without having to worry as much about the navigational keys. Once you've purchased the arc spread weapon, you can hide out in a corner of the game screen and take enemies out as they attack. Because the spread weapon delivers a spread shot, you can easily take out attacking enemies without having to worry about running into them and losing life points.
Overall, Heavy Weapons is an excellent, engrossing action shooting game any fan of the genre needs to play at least once. It can be a bit too easy in the beginning, but once the action starts picking up, it will give even the most experienced player the level of challenge they're looking for. The great thing about this game is that anyone can have fun with it regardless of skill or experience level. It's an entirely addictive game that will keep you on the edge of your seat level after level. Newcomers are going to have trouble with it in the beginning, but with a little practice, even beginners should be able to do fairly well. Just remember to stay ahead of the enemies and make good use of the weapons you can buy. Choose your weapons for each level wisely and you should do fine.
