Canary Walkthrough

In the early 20th century, coal miners would carry canaries into the mines to check for dangerous gases. If the canary got sick died, then it meant that poisonous gases were present in the mines, and the miners would either avoid working in that mine or use protective gear. The advent of modern technology and animal rights groups put an end to this practice, but the phrase "canary in the coal mine" is still used to mean a warning of danger to come. This practice is also the premise of the shooting game, Canary.

In Canary, you play the role of a mining canary. Instead of being a mere living sensor, however you are a miner equipped with a cutting laser. Your objective in this shooting game is to maneuver through each of the twenty-four levels. Along the way, you will have to cut through obstacles, evade aliens, and solve puzzles. Your progress is saved upon the completion of each level, allowing you to continue your game the next time that you play.

Canary uses a simple mouse-only control scheme. Your character follows your mouse cursor. The further your cursor is from your character, the faster he we'll assume that the character is male) will move towards it. Click the left mouse button to shoot your laser. To cut through objects, remain still while firing to focus your laser on the object that you wish to cut through. Pay attention to the blue bar in the upper-left corner of this shooting game's interface. If this bar fills, your laser will overheat and you will not be able to fire until it cools down.

At first glance, Canary may seem like a standard SHMUP, but you will quickly discover that it is not. There are many physics game elements here as well. To push objects, move up against them. This is often necessary to clear a path for you to advance, but in some cases, you will be able to push objects on top of enemies to crush them. Be careful because falling objects can also harm your character (I guess his hardhat is useless)!

Canary is a unique combination of physics game and shoot 'em up. If you are a fan of shooting games and want to use your brain as well as your trigger finger, then Canary is just the game for you!
